Personnally, paying close to 100$ for cables at any Big Box Retailer (like here, or here or even this one) is like getting robbed, there is nothing that justifies the price. It's like buying those garantees they always offer, i just don't do it, it's just a sort of commission for the sales man, you know that in 3-4 years when your camera or TV breaks, you get a new one! Monster cables has an 80% markup on all products where ever you go, it's a fact that was confirmed from the salesmen at stores. It is to encourage the sales reps to sell them as they probably get a large piece of that as an incentive.
Back in 2007, Gizmodo had done a great test to compare cables from Monoprice to some from Monster Cable. They tested the cables at different resolutions and bit rates with a Tektronix DSA8200 Digital Serial Analyzer. The results are to be expected, the cheap cables kept up with the expensive ones, only to fail at the extreme high resolutions.
There are a few parts to read, but they really are imported for all future home theatre projects.
