There are many Easter eggs in movies, I enjoy getting a DVD and looking for them in the special features and then reading about them online.  One such hollywood joke is the Wilhelm Scream.  I don't know how it because famous, but the Wiki article does give a great background to the sound along with the sound clip.  Do a search on YouTube for some compilations clips made, they are pretty hilarious!

I don't remember the first time i noticed it, but i know it's in a lot of  George Lucas' movies, I know it's in all the Indiana Jones movies, when i watched the DVDs I was laughing at it, and Steven Spielberg also has it in his movies.  The earliest movie that has used this effect is the 1951 movie Distant Drums.

Here is a list of movies where you can hear the scream, not sure how updated that list, I looked quickly, there are some surprising movies on the list.  Re-watch some of your favorite movies, you'll be surprised, the sound clip is probably there and you didn't even notice it!
