Alot of people always ask me for suggestions as to what speakers to get for their first home theatre system. It is a hard question to answer, because i believe that everyone hears a little different, and everyone's placement of the speakers always affect the image they will create.
To better understand how a speaker works, you can always read the Wiki for LoudSpeakers. It's a good base line to understand what you need to power them. If you ask any audiophile, more power from your amplifier is always better for the details.
Every year, i go with my dad to Montreal's Salon Son & Image show. There are great demos, live bands, and a few other things at the show. It's no CES show, but they target the higher end of the market for home audio. It is a great place to go and see different speakers, see the different types of setups and so forth, i highly recommend it to anyone who is a slight audiophile!
I found a guide on which type of speakers from Crutchfield, they give suggestions on what to look for depending on the use you need. They cover the basics really well.
That gives you a good general over view of the different types of speakers, but if you're looking mainly Home Theater targeted speakers, there is a great article here. There is also another guide here from Gizmag that cover more specific technical details on what to look for.
When you're shopping, always remember some basic guides:
- Detemine a budget! Not all of us can afford the great sounding Kef Muon Speakers
- The look of the speaker does not always mean they sound good
- Bring music or movies you're used to hearing, so you can do a proper comparison
Just remember these basic steps, and i'm sure you will find the right speakers. Don't get fooled or dupped by the sales man, what might sound great when they demo in the store on a 10,000$ McIntosh might not sound the same at home. The bigger brand named speakers will come a higher price tag, so take your time, and shop for what you like.
