How to use Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD with your PS3

PS3 Formats list
The right side of a Playstation3

When the Sony Playstation 3 was first announced in 2005, I saw it as a great all in one solution for my home theatre. When Blu-Ray was starting out, the Playstation 3 was the best Blu-Ray player to get as it was constantly updated. It was also the first "player" to officially support BD Live 2.0. I own one now, and i don't regret getting it. It has become my media center in my living room, I stream my music and videos (of all the downloaded shows i missed or didn't record on my PVR) from my computer, I watch my Blu-Rays from it, and even play the occational GTA4.

If you look at the right side of the Playstation 3 (above), there is a list of the supported formats.  They have added more Codecs with each firmware update, and i hope eventually that it will be able to properly decode Dobly TrueHD and DTS-HD in lossless through the HDMI.  A work around is to setup the Playstation to send the lossless audio through a multichannel linear PCM (LPCM) stream and have your Amplifier receiver or Pre-Amplifier decode it and play it back. Of course, you must have a reciever that can decode that, such as the Integra DTC 9.8, or the Sony STR-DA2400ES.
