Intel announced Wireless HD streaming called “WiDi”, supports 720p

Annoucned during Intel's Keynote during CES 2010 is the new WiDi technology, which enables from a computer with a Intel Core i3 or i5 and a Intel HD Graphic card to send streaming video 720p and audio signal to your HDTV wirelessly.

It is very simple in execution, press a button on your laptop and your display will appear on your TV.  This is great, but it is only the beginning as other internet searches show that it does not do HDCP yet, so no Blu-Ray support at the moment, but I am sure that 1080p will come with HDCP when laptops become more powerful.  From what the engadget post, not sure if DVDs work but they are only 480p so bandwidth is not an issue.

I googled it to get more information, it looks like a wifi box made by Netgear called "Push 2 TV" that uses 802.11n will plug to your PC, and it should be in the sub 100$ range.  It should go on sale at big box retailers in late January.

  • Anandtech has the most information about WiDi here.

Update: That was fast, Toshiba Satellite E205 - the first laptop with built in WiDi!

Note: this is not the same as Wireless USB.

Update April 23, 2010:  Toms Hardware has a comprehensive review of Intel's WiDi.  The article explains how easy it is, and if you view the comment below by Catalin, it can now do 1080p!  You can read the article here.
