Intel has had the fasted CPU crown for a little while now. The Core i7 was released about 7 months ago, and prices have dropped a little, so it is almost about time for me to probably upgrade soon. Motherboards are still at the 250$ mark, but DDR3 ram has dropped considerably.
Only one of my friends have gone with the Core i7 CPUs when he upgraded his PC, but all the rest have stuck with the tried and trued Intel Core 2 Duo or Quad line. It's no surprise, the price vs performance is unmatched from any compeditor!
I haven't upgraded yet mainly because of rumors of a new socket and CPU from Intel. This reminds me of when socket 775 was released for the Pentium4, 1 CPU, 2 sockets, way to confuse people Intel and force people to spend more money...
