I talked to Ben Drawbaugh for a job over at engadgetHD.com onces, it was an interview to post on that site a few years ago. Just by talking to him, i could tell his knowledge was overwhelming, and he was light years ahead of me. That's why when he posts something on his blog Ben Drawbaugh » How good can it be, if it isn't HD? - i read it intentively and save the link.
Early last year, a little bit before the death of HD-DVDs, he posted a great article that explains the different HD Audio formats Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, as well as what type of connectors they use.
It might be a little dated, he mentions some Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players that are not longer available at retail, but the information is great. You can read the whole article here.
