I was chatting with a friend, and he just purchased his new PS3 Slim and he spent the weekend reading up on it, i was surprised to learn that the news Playstation model, the PS3 Slim and not the previous model now support HD audio - Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA - through Bitstream on HDMI!

I googled it and found a great detailed page called Playstation 3 Secrets with a LOT of information about the Playstation 3 models, the differences and a lot of details the average consumer doesn't know.  They confirm, that only the Slim models can do the HD audio.  Looks like it's time for an upgrade for me soon.

I am shocked at myself for having missed that big bit of information, not being able to do HD audio on the PS3 was the only thing holding it back from becoming the best "all around" Blu-Ray player (It is my oppinion people!). Even Engadget had a post back in August 2009 and Giz modo had a post,  how did i miss that one!?

Now we hear that the fatboy gone slim supports Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bitstream output to your receiver. Hear that audio nerds? Bitstream. See the HDMI chip on previous generations of the PS3 didn't support bitstream output of the new(ish) high def codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. As such, the PS3 had to decode it internally before sending it over to your receiver via LPCM. A process that could garble the lossless audio depending on your setup.

Now all we need Blu-Ray 3d format supported on the PS3, oh wait, it already has been confirmed!
