hdmi-plugsOn May 28, the HDMI licensing group called LLC has officially confirmed and released details for the newest HDMI standard version 1.4.  With the new standard comes new features to be built into upcoming products that will support the new HDMI standard.  Good thing it is physically exactly the same as v1.0, older Audio/Visual equipment will still be compatable.

New features include increased resolution bandwidth of 3840x2160 @ 24Hz/25Hz/30Hz
and 4096x2160 @ 24Hz, more color bandwidth for more vivid images, a channel for Audio Upstream so you can use 1 cable to send and recieve information from your units, helping reduce your cables. There is also mention of a 3D display standard for those new upcoming digital 3D movies, but for me, the most interesting is the Automotive HDMI standard introduced.

Personnally, i think having HD playback in your car is a cool idea, but what's the point? It really isn't safe, even if your passengers are watching, the driver will get distracted. At the same time, i can see how the cabling can be used for the future dashboards with clusters being a complete screen, sort of what's in the new Nissan GT-R.

There are some other details as well, a mini HDMI standard and a HDMI Ethernet channel.  I wonder how the ethernet would work, HDMI to RJ45 adaptors?  Interesting...
