Understanding SSDs, how they work, and their drawbacks

I found this really fantastic article posted on AnandTech.com's website, by Anand himself. He goes into great detail on how SSDs (Solid State Drives) work, and i learned a LOT from this article.  I have been curious about the next generation of Harddisks, reading about Hybrid drives, and now SSDs.  I am hoping prices drop to the point where a 128gb or 256gb drive is affordable this summer.  After reading this article i have come to some conclusions: Pros

  • These drives are definetly going to kill our standard spinning plater drives.
  • Intel are definetly the benchmark for SSD speeds and reliablity.
  • Cons

  • They are still very young, with many bugs to iron out.
  • Until an established HDD manufacturer makes one, i'm going to wait.
